Suspend
Editorial Design
BRIEF
Suspend is an exclusive aerial sports magazine with a focus on skydiving and paragliding. It needs to connect more with its mainly female readership and to add a little luxury. It has become repetitive, and is having difficulty capturing aesthetic images on a monthly basis without breaking its budget.
CONCEPT
To fill the design brief, I set the two main aims of evoking an emotional response and providing a refined aesthetic. The layout elicits a feeling of expansiveness and an otherworldly experience, like floating on air. This is achieved through the use of negative space and a minimalist design using smaller sized images delicately interspersed throughout the text. I added illustrations of birds and used a layout of stepped repetition, with each illustration sized incrementally larger, to add to the feeling of expansiveness like taking off from the ground or taking a deep breath.
